German Ticket Calculator

Filed under: Auto, Living here basics — tifany74 @ 17:36

Got blitzed? Would you like an idea of what you might have to pay? Use the calculator below to figure it out! Fortunately, most German tickets aren’t nearly as high as those in the US, but you can’t talk yourself out of them either – not with those hideous photographs pinning you to the scene.

http://www.weiterhilfe.de/buss_ radar/index. php

Quick translation:

Überschreitung = the number of km over the speed limit that you were going (i.e. the limit is 50km/h in town. You were going 60km/h. Your überschreitung is 10)

Tatort = innerhalb means inside the city limits and außhalb means outside city limits (school zones will be calculated differently, but still don’t cause a high ticket unless your “überschreitung” is very high)

Fahrzeug = type of vehicle – most of you will have that first category – under 3.5 tons.

Probezeit = probation (i.e. are you on probation? high points? Hopefully for most of you, the answer is “Keine Probezeit.”)

The highest ticket that I ever got was for 30 Euros for speeding through a school zone (when there were no children present, of course, but no, I’m not proud).

When you get your ticket pay it quickly and save all your receipts. Keep these records handy. Sometimes it takes so long for the ticket payment to register in their system that you will get a second bill with late fees. Be able to show that you’ve paid and when.

Famous Cameras:

  • Beware of the cameras on the bridge just as you leave Dusseldorf International Airport. The speed is slower there than most autobahn speeds and those cameras catch a lot of people. You’re usually talking a lot with your new guests and may not notice that speed zone.
  • There are occasionally police or a temporary camera set up by the school in Gillrath. 30km/hour seems excessively slow, but that is the speed limit and the camera is often not noticeable until it’s too late.

Review: We have used Autohaus Himmels on several occasions from small things like marder chewed wiring (that they repaired for free!) to larger things like replacing break pads. They have always been very professional, friendly, and quick. Once they had my break pads in stock, it took them only 4 hours to have the job done. I dropped it off at 8, walked to Rewe for a coffee, and by noon, it was done. Amazing. They do take the VAT form. You can pay at the NATO VAT office and bring back the paperwork to the autohaus.

FYI: Gas at Schinnen

Filed under: Auto, Living here basics — tifany74 @ 12:08
If you haven’t been frustrated by this already, here’s a little FYI to prevent some frustration in the future:

If you are registered for gas in Germany, you can no longer purchase gas at Schinnen. Yep, it’s a sad catch 22, but all of us Germany folks have to use the new ESSO gas cards and they WILL NOT work at Schinnen. :(

So, plan your trip accordingly. The ESSO in Wehr is probably the closest to Schinnen on the German side of the border and it’s an easy drive through Hillensberg to Schinnen. So, in a pinch when you’re driving on fumes, go there.

International Driver’s License

Filed under: Auto, Living here basics — tifany74 @ 14:54

* You can also find information in your Surviving Overseas Booklet provided by the Airmen Family Readiness Center at GK.

Kreis Heinsberg/Kreisverwaltung
Address: Valkenburger Str. 45
52525 Heinsberg, Germany
Get DirectionsTelephone: 02452-131050/02452 13-1100
Hours: Mon 0700-1800 – Tues & Wed 0700-1700 – Fri 0700-1500 – Sat 0900-1200

Unfortunately, even in the couple years that I’ve lived here, police are cracking down on the rules about proper documents and crossing the border means you need your International Driver’s License in addition to your USAREUR license. It’s inexpensive though – a whole lot less that the cost of a ticket if you get caught without one, and it will come in handy when you travel to other countries that require it. Besides, it is more widely recognized then your USAREUR one, if there is a problem, it can help to have something that the police know. You certainly don’t want to have to argue your rights far from home in a language you can’t speak. Yep… this is one of those “better safe than sorry” situations.

The procedure:

1. BRING:
  • Your US passport or military ID
  • Your USAREUR license
  • A European-sized passport photo (Here’s a place in GK that’s fast)
  • Cash. The current fee is 14 Euros cash – it may change. Come prepared with a little extra.
2. GO: to the Heinsberg Administration offices at the address above DURING their office hours. The building is on the corner of Siemenstrasse and Valkenburger Strasse in Heinsberg. There is a parking lot next to it. You need to go into the two story annex to the left of the main building called “Strassenverkehrsamt.” It’s glass and brick. Inside the building, go to the right past the cashier (Kasse).

3. FILL OUT the paperwork that they give you and give them your passport photo.

4. PAY the fee at the Kasse.

5. BRING the cashier receipt back to the person who helped you and then they will give you your new license.

IMPORTANT: Your International Driver’s License isn’t valid alone. It MUST be shown WITH a valid national driver’s license from the issuing country of the International Driver’s License. So, if you get the International Driver’s License in Germany, you must have a USAREUR license issued in Germany. Your International Driver’s License is also ONLY valid outside the country that you’re in. It will be valid for three years.

IF YOU’RE MOVING HERE: If you’re not in the GK area yet, do be sure that your state driver’s license is current when you arrive and when you test. You cannot get a USAREUR license without a valid state license. No USAREUR license = no driving privileges anywhere over here.

Gas Cards

Filed under: Auto, Living here basics — tifany74 @ 15:32

This is by no means comprehensive, but some additional information on the new AAFES/Esso Gas Card. For more information/training, go to this website:

http://www.imcom-europe.army.mil/sites/news/fuelcard.asp.

From last night’s town hall meeting:

1) For US, if you are eligible to buy gas coupons, you are eligible for the fuel card. For your non-US friends, it will vary based on their country of origin and where they live.

2) There are two different card types: Blue Cards for POVs and Red Cards for GOVs- only for fuel in Germany.

3) Long term card good as long as the car is registered. Short term card good for 30-days, but can be extended as needed (for TDYs, rentals, etc).

4) If you need more than your monthly ration (normally 400 liters/month) you can get a ration supplement.

5) One Car – One Card. But, one account (one pot of money) for all cars under the sponsor.

6) Cash applied towards sponsor’s account can be used by every card on that account. Therefore, if you have more than one car, you must coordinate to ensure you don’t go over the money in the account.

7) You can go into the hole on your account (AAFES will cover the difference) but you will not be able to use the card until its balance is back up over $1. Example: I have $2 on my account. I pump $100 worth of fuel. The cost will be covered, but my account will be at -$98, and I will be unable to use any card against that account until it is above $1.

8) If you go above your ration amount at an Esso station, you will be charged the euro price for the entire amount you pumped. Example: you have 49 liters left for the month. You pump 50 liters at an Esso. You don’t have the ration to cover the full 50 liters, so you must pay the Esso price in euros for the entire 50 liters (no split payment between your card and economy price).

9) At AAFES you can use the fuel card, cash, or credit card. At Esso only the fuel card will get you the reduced price. There are 1200 Essos in Germany. I recommend a map book called Esso Tiger on Tour, it lists every Esso station.

10) Card accounts can be loaded with money using various methods, including on-line payment and direct deposit.

11) Your most current transaction slip is the most important. It contains how much you spent, how much money is left in your account, and how much fuel is left in your ration for that vehicle.

12) No more ration sheet means no more ability to buy gas coupons, unless the place giving the coupons is automated into the fuel card system, which is un-likely.

13) When a vehicle is sold or de-registered, then any remaining credit in your account will be refunded to you.

Other notes:

1) AAFES/Esso is working with NATEX and Rheindahlen gas stations, but until an agreement is reached, the U.S. will not be able to get fuel from those locations.

2) No decision yet on if the AAFES station at Schinnen will have this program.

3) If you are traveling on official orders (including leave) you should be able to get a gas ration at AAFES outside of Germany – more to follow.

4) Non-DEERS (non-US) can add money on-line by linking through the AAFES website.

5) Cards will be sent out to the US personnel the end of July and early August. Fuel coupons should be good until their stated expiration.

Since we are PCSing and my husband had to ship his truck back to the States, he took it to Hans Borger to be detailed. Hans did an incredible job. When we got the truck back, it looked practically brand new! And it passed inspection with flying colors. Hans works at Schinnen and knows the inspectors at the Vehicle Processing Office, so he is well aware of what the inspections entail.
My husband drives a Chevy Silverado…an extra large pickup truck, but Hans had it done in less than 8 hours and he charged 100 euros. It was well worth every cent.
I should also mention that he does the work at his home, not at Schinnen. He lives in Brunssum, and his house is very easy to find. He speaks excellent English. He’s a license plate collector, so even if you don’t have to get your car detailed, contact him if you have any license plates that you want to get rid of.

Esso Stations for Gas Card use

Filed under: Auto, Living here basics — tifany74 @ 16:19

For all Esso stations, here’s a great website that will also allow you to find stations along a trip route. http://www.euromap.be/esso/start.aspx You can also get a copy of the map book, Tiger on Tour which shows the location of all 1200 Esso stations in Germany as well as provides a good road map.

Places locally that take gas cards:

Heinsburg: The Esso on the 221 next to Janses Mattes just north of the A46 on ramp, is VERY friendly and takes the gas card.

Tuddern: Esso on the main street – Sittarder Strasse

Ubach-Palenburg: The Esso station near McDonalds.

Wehr
: The Esso on the right side of B56 heading towards Sittard
Hours: tues – sat 06450-01800, sunday and holidays 0800-1800
