I love this restaurant. It is very nicely decorated and welcoming. The staff have always been very friendly, accommodating, and prompt – many, but not all, speak English. Everything I’ve tried has been delicious. They have a grill where you bring the meat, fruits, vegetables that you want from the buffet and they cook it up for you with one of their many sauces that you can choose from. The have a small selection of sushi, but it is always fresh and delicious. There is something for everyone – fresh salads and fruit, noodle dishes, fish, steak, chicken, seafood, soup, and a good selection of traditional oriental dishes. I’ve never seen General Tso’s chicken, sesame chicken, or lo mein noodles on the buffet, but there are so many other delicious things that we don’t miss it. There isn’t much of a desert selection – ice cream or jell-o, but my kids were plenty happy with the selection of ice cream flavors and toppings. We always leave this
restaurant very full and happy. Definitely worth the price!

Mango Olive: Mongolian BBQ on the Oberhausen Promenade

Reader Restaurant Review…

Mango Olive
Promenade 35

“We tried out Mango Olive, the Mongolian BBQ place on the Oberhausen promenade, last weekend. It was good, as good as any I’ve had in the states, although the buffet did not offer as many choices sauce and spice wise. Also, the bowls are small, but as I imagine most people get the “all you can eat” price, the small bowls don’t matter. Neither our server or the grill-cook spoke any English and the menu was in German, but with so many imported words, it wasn’t at all hard to figure out what was what.

You pile your bowl full of whatever meat and veggies you want and then tell the grill-chef what kind of sauce you want. (You have about seven sauces to choose from.) Then they throw it all on the grill and give it back to you along with some rice. It’s very trendy/chic looking inside with a large bar so would be a fun date night place if you ever get an opportunity for one of those. However, we were there with both kids and the stroller and didn’t feel out of place. We were there early evening, however, which turned out to be good thing ’cause before 18:00 the all you can eat bowl is 14 Euro instead of 19 Euro and kids eat free.

If you’re not into Asian, but the rest of your group is, never fear. The menu also boasts 8-10 pasta dishes, ranging from traditional Italian spaghetti to something akin to pad Thai. (Everyone we saw was doing the stir fry thing.)

I’d go back, but there were also several other restaurants on the promenade I’d like to try, specifically the Spanish one right next door.”

TR&TA! Sushi and Fish in Sittard

TR&TA
Voorstad 30
6131CR Sittard
Tel: 0031-046-45-29-503
Web: http://www.resto-trenta.nl
Open: Mon, Wed-Sat 1100-2200; Sun 1600-2200 (Shopping Sundays opens at 1100)
Closed on Tuesdays

Delicious!! This is the best Sushi place I’ve been to in a while. Close to the market in Sittard with plenty of parking nearby, TR&TA satisfied my sushi craving and will bring me back for more. The atmosphere is fantastic – modern and clean, classy and elegant. Beautiful water fountains and a nice fireplace with couches around it. The service was excellent and the food – amazing.

The menu has both hot fish dishes and sushi and though we stuck with the sushi menu, all the dishes that came by us looked absolutely beautiful. They definitely do presentation well.

The bites in the photo were a free sample brought to us before our meal – a special treat for Valentine’s weekend. Tasty and a nice touch.

The saffron soup (saffraansoep met roodbaarsfilet) was light, creamy, flavorful, and delicious. It wet my appetite without spoiling it.

I had the Catarratto – medium white wine. Light, delicious. Not dry nor sweet. Excellent with my meal.

We ordered the 16 piece Sashimi Menu and the TR&TA 20 piece sushi menu and split it. It was enough for two very hungry adults. There were a few rolls on the sushi menu, but mostly sashimi, large strips of fish without rice, and a delicious avocado cone. Everything was wonderful. The salmon especially had a spectacular flavor that almost temped us into ordering more. My only gripe is that I could have used a bit more ginger, but I could have asked for more and I’m sure they would have brought it. Beware of the wasabi. It’s good, but hotter than most I’ve had before, so a little goes a long way!

For dessert we ordered the chocolademousse – three mounds of chocolate mousse with a light vanilla sauce and some crunchy dessert wafers on top. The cappuccinos are as amazing as the rest of the menu.

Will I go there again? Definitely. Service, atmosphere, food… all excellent. And, the prices really aren’t as bad as I expected. The drinks aren’t inflated like many restaurants, so although the 20 piece plate cost 24.50, the total bill with appetizers and dessert was far less than meals at other restaurants.

Location – near the market square, but on a regular road, there is street side parking, but there are also two huge parking lots (free ones) just a couple blocks away. If you’re standing in the market and walk down the pedestrian street that is on the other side of the square from the V&D – walk all the way down that street until you reach a real road. You’ll see Thai Garden. TR&TA is just a couple blocks down from Thai Garden on the left.

We enjoyed delicious Korean food at the Preuvinement in Maastricht a couple weeks ago and the best thing was that they had recipes and a restaurant list in English!

“We found an oriental restaurant in GK that is now a family favorite. Cam Nguyen is located on the main street in Geilenkirchen. It’s across the street from Jabush…just up the hill, a few stores up from the clothing store takko. They have an English menu.”

“My favorite lunch spot, and where my friends and I agree to get together 9 times out of 10. It’s also very cheap.”

Tradition – Vietnamese Restaurant in Aachen

5 Stars! Wow! Highly recommended!

Tradition aus Vietnam bei Van

Web: www.bei-van.de

Open: Tues – Sun 1200-1500 and 1730-2330
Closed: Mondays
Reservations: Highly recommended

This restaurant has it all… the ambiance is fabulous. The place is clean, elegant, and beautifully decorated. It’s small and comfortable. The menu is expansive, so you will have a lot of choices plus pre-set course meals if you’d like to try a bit of everything. The food is beautifully presented on very nice plates with orchids (edible) and delicious sauces. And flavor! Wow. A perfect blend of Chinese and Thai – sauces that complement the food perfectly without overpowering it. Combine this restaurant with a night at the theater or the spa and you have a perfect date night!

Do make reservations. This place is normally packed with long waits to get in. The later you go, the better your chances.

I had #111 – a delicious 3 course meal. The course meals are for 2 persons or more. The egg rolls (they call them Kaiser roll) are amazing! I could have eaten 10. Then a large platter (above) was brought out loaded with deliciously cooked vegetables and 4 different meats. We were stuffed and couldn’t finish it all. The dessert was a very nice ice cream with coconut inside. Light, creamy, and delicious. I will go back here again – definitely.

Mr. Li’s De Wok restaurant is a good Chinese restaurant on Sittard’s market square that has a small ala-carte menu and a large buffet. The buffet is around 17 Euros per person (kids are less) and you can eat until you drop. For the set buffet price, you can eat fruit and sushi, fried foods and typical Chinese meat dishes, soup, Mongolian BBQ, and freshly cooked Japanese style tilapia, salmon, swordfish, and other delicious fish.

The food here cannot compare to Asian food you might encounter in San Francisco, but for the Netherlands, it’s pretty good and if you’re hungry, you can really stuff yourself. Kids are welcome and the ladies who work there are very sweet with children, but even with a reduced price, unless your kids eat a lot, you won’t get your money’s worth from it. It is pricey for the amount of food that small ones eat.

Thai Garden – Sittard

Located within walking distance of the market square in Sittard is great Thai restaurant, the Thai Garden.

Thai Garden
Rijksweg Noord 8
6131 Sittard
Tel: 0031-046-451-7324
Web: www.nl.thaigarden
Menu: http://www.thaigarden.nl/menukaart.htm

The restaurant: This place is small, yet popular. When we showed up tonight just after opening, we were the first ones there, but ours was the only table without a reserved sign on it. Soon, the entire place was packed. So, I recommend making a reservation in advance, especially on a weekend or if you have a group of more than 2 people. The atmosphere is nice though. It is clean and very simply decorated.

The food: I’ve eaten a lot of Thai and this ranks up there. The flavors are wonderful and the menu in Dutch and Thai offers an almost overwhelming list of choices. Do watch for the asterisks by the names. They will indicate spiciness. All our choices were delicious and the portions were generous enough that we could have split the entree almost and definitely split the dessert.

The known:
Appetizers:
#1 – The lumpia were delicious. Highly recommended.
#4 – Breaded prawns (garnelen in Dutch) – very good.

Entree:
#57 Pad Thai Kung – a absolutely delicious serving of Pad Thai with giant prawns. The noodles were delicious and the flavors balanced well. This dish is not spicy, but packed with flavor. I highly recommend it and would order it again – soon. Oh… and a warning: the little slice of red pepper on top of the pile of noodles is not a red bell pepper, so don’t pop it into your mouth and chomp down on it unless you like fiery things. Hot!
#144 Panang neua – beef served in a coconut milk, curry broth with rice on the side. Delicious and just a little spicy.

Dessert:
#11 – Pol lai roomijs – really light coconut ice cream served over fresh fruit with a light raspberry sauce. Delicious.

The service: Wonderful! The staff were attentive and courteous, willing to help us with the Dutch we didn’t understand, and quick to help without hovering.

The prices: Mid-range. Face it… nothing here is cheap with the exchange rate as it is, so if you are going out for a nice dinner, you will pay. This place is actually pretty comparable with other restaurants in the area especially if you take into account the quality of the food and the generous portions. Appetizers are in the 4-6 range. Main courses are between 12 and 16 for most. Desserts are around 5. Beverages are not overpriced.
